Level: Introductory-advanced

Suitable: Years 10-12

This session provides students with a practical understanding of strength and power testing. It can be used as an introduction to the content in years 10 and 11 or as an advanced session for students undertaking Unit 4 to consolidate knowledge and understanding.

Students will work with a national level strength and conditioning scientist in our training facility to determine their muscular strength (~1 repetition maximum i.e. 1 RM) and power using correct technique, elite athlete test protocols and equipment. Students will be provided with normative data from other sports to enable them to compare and discuss their results at school. Teachers can use class strength and power profiles to direct the development of individual training programs and promote understanding of fitness components and testing protocols.

Students will be assessed on the following measures:

  • Upper body strength- relative vs. absolute results
  • Lower body strength- relative vs. absolute results
  • Upper body power-using specialised ‘myotest’ equipment
  • Lower body power-using specialised ‘myotest’ equipment
  • Compare student test data across the class using the report provided
  • Compare and discuss student results to norms from different sports
