Seminar 2: Preparing an Olympic Athlete for Competition

 

 

Training Strength & Power in Olympic Athletes
Presented by: Mr Jeremy Oliver (CEO, Visualcoaching®)

 

Mr. Jeremy Oliver is an exercise scientist and co-founder of the acclaimed Visualcoaching® Pro software. He is recognised as a leading strength and conditioning coach currently working with sport and athlete campaigns for London 2012. Jeremy established Visualcoaching® software in 2000 and it has rapidly become the leading prescription and education tool for strength and conditioning professionals. The software is now used in leading Universities around the world, Institutes of Sport, United States Olympic Teams, Schools and colleges plus AFL/NRL to name a few. Visualcoaching® is one of the few companies in the world where the team develops software and coaches High Performance Athletes.

 

Having coached many athletes for numerous Olympic and Commonwealth Games, Jeremy will share his thoughts and training plans across a variety of sports. There will be a focus on swimming (Grant Hackett & Leisel Jones), Boxing (Brad Pitt) and Track and Field – sprints (Sean Wroe) that will give us a rare insight into the physical development of these athletes in their preparation for The Olympic Games.

 


 

Beyond Physical Performance
Presented by: Lisa Stevens (Director, Racing Mind)

 

As a sports psychologist, Ms. Lisa Stevens has worked with Swimming Australia; the Victorian Institute of Sport; Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, Racing Victoria Limited, Motor Sport, and Winter Olympic sports. Lisa is the principal consultant and director of Racing Mind, a sports psychology consultancy.

 

Lisa was a professional athlete, coach and official both in Australia and overseas, before becoming a psychologist and has used her experience in these roles to help make her work highly relevant and practical to coaches and athletes. Lisa is a member of the College of Sport Psychologists and has published and presented her research internationally.

 

Lisa will be presenting on the role that mental skills play in superior performance including common issues such as the deficit between practice and performance. Lisa will also share with us practical exercises that increase consistency in performance across environments.
                                               


 

The Olympic Blue Print: Training Adaptations & Performance
Presented by: Dr Melissa Arkinstall (Director, Exercise Research Australia)

 

Dr. Melissa Arkinstall is a sports scientist and the Director of Exercise Research Australia (ERA). Melissa leads the ERA sports science team to deliver education, fitness testing and training services to a wide range of sports including: Victorian and Australian Cricket, Carlton FC, Essendon FC, Richmond FC, V8 Supercars, Badminton Australia, Football Federation Victoria, Rowing Australia and Racing Victoria Ltd. ERA has also been the preferred service provider of physiology testing to the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) since being formed in 2004.

 

Melissa’s research has been presented at both a national and international level with numerous papers published in international journals of high regard. Melissa is also a member of the RMIT Human Movement Course Advisory Board.

 

Melissa will discuss the latest research findings on the physiological responses to training across different sports and how these adaptations relate to improved performance in competition. Melissa will conclude with providing information on the genetic traits of our elite endurance and sprint performers.
